Raw Cat Food: Myths, Facts, and How to Transition Your Cat

Raw feeding for cats generates more questions — and more misinformation — than almost any other pet nutrition topic. Some of what you've heard is true. A lot of it isn't. Here's a clear-eyed look at the facts, the most common myths, the brands we trust, and how to actually make the transition if you decide to try it.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They evolved eating whole prey — muscle meat, organ meat, bones, and the moisture-rich contents of their prey's stomach. Commercial raw food is the closest thing available to that natural diet in a convenient, safe, and balanced format. For many cats it produces noticeable improvements in coat condition, energy, digestion, litter box odor, and long-term urinary and kidney health.

Common Myths About Raw Cat Food — Addressed

MYTH: Raw pet food is dangerous because of bacteria like Salmonella.
FACT: The raw brands we carry have strong safety track records and use rigorous pathogen control methods. Primal Pet Foods and Steve's Real Food Quest use High Pressure Processing (HPP) — a cold-water pressure treatment that eliminates harmful pathogens including Salmonella and Listeria without cooking the food. Small Batch Pet takes a different approach, choosing not to use HPP in favor of 100% traceable, locally sourced ingredients with strict handling and testing throughout their process. Basic handling precautions apply regardless of brand — wash hands and bowls, keep raw food frozen until use, and thaw in the refrigerator.
MYTH: Cats can't digest raw meat.
FACT: Cats are biologically designed to digest raw meat. Their digestive systems are shorter and more acidic than humans, specifically adapted for processing raw animal protein efficiently. It is highly processed starch and carbohydrate-heavy kibble that cats are not biologically adapted to digest — not raw meat.
MYTH: Raw food isn't nutritionally balanced.
FACT: Commercial raw cat foods are formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional standards for complete and balanced diets. The brands we carry — Primal Pet Foods, Small Batch Pet, and Steve's Real Food Quest — are all complete and balanced and appropriate as sole diets. This is very different from homemade raw food, which does require careful nutritional planning.
MYTH: Raw feeding is too expensive to be practical.
FACT: Raw food does cost more per pound than standard kibble. However, raw food is significantly more nutrient-dense, meaning cats typically eat smaller portions and absorb more of what they eat. Many raw-fed cat owners report fewer veterinary bills over time related to urinary tract disease, kidney disease, and obesity — conditions strongly associated with low-quality, carbohydrate-heavy dry food. A hybrid approach — feeding raw for one meal a day alongside a quality wet food — is a practical middle ground many customers use.
MYTH: Cats won't eat raw food because they're too used to kibble.
FACT: Some cats do take time to transition — cats are famously neophobic (resistant to new foods), especially those that have eaten the same food for years. But with patience and the right transition approach, most cats make the switch successfully. Freeze-dried raw is often an easier entry point for resistant cats because the texture is closer to dry food.

Raw Cat Food Brands We Carry

How to Transition Your Cat to Raw

Cats are not dogs — they require a slower, more patient transition approach. Rushing a cat food transition is the most common reason it fails. Here's the method that works best for most cats:

Phase Duration What to Do
Phase 1 — Introduce smell Days 1–3 Place a small amount of raw food next to your cat's current food at mealtime. Let them sniff it. Don't mix yet — just familiarize.
Phase 2 — Small mix Days 4–7 Mix approximately 10% raw into current food. Watch for any digestive changes. If stool is normal, proceed.
Phase 3 — Increase ratio Days 8–14 Increase to 25% raw, 75% current food. Continue monitoring digestion.
Phase 4 — Halfway Days 15–21 50/50 split. Most cats are doing well at this stage. Stool may be smaller and firmer — this is normal with raw feeding.
Phase 5 — Final transition Days 22–28 75% raw, 25% current food, then 100% raw. Some cats need an extra week at each phase — follow your cat's cues, not the calendar.
Tips for resistant cats: Freeze-dried raw crumbled on top of your cat's current food is one of the most effective first steps — the texture is familiar and the aroma is appealing. Some cats respond well to starting with a novel protein they haven't had before. Adding a splash of pet-safe bone broth can also help entice picky eaters — we carry bone broth from Primal Pet Foods, Open Farm, and The Honest Kitchen, all formulated specifically for pets. Patience is the most important ingredient — some cats take several weeks to fully accept a new food.

What to Expect After Transitioning

Most cat owners who successfully transition to raw report the same set of changes within the first four to eight weeks:

Coat condition — shinier, softer coat is one of the most commonly reported and most visible improvements. The increase in quality animal fat and protein directly supports skin and coat health.

Litter box — smaller, firmer, and significantly less odorous stool. Raw-fed cats absorb more of what they eat, producing less waste. This is one of the changes most surprising to new raw feeders.

Energy and behavior — many owners report increased energy, playfulness, and mental alertness — particularly in cats that were lethargic on a kibble-heavy diet.

Weight — overweight cats often lose excess weight on raw because the diet is higher in protein and fat and lower in the carbohydrates that drive feline obesity. Underweight cats often gain healthy muscle mass.

Drinking less water — raw food is 60-70% moisture, so raw-fed cats naturally drink less from their water bowl. This is normal and healthy — they're getting their hydration from food as nature intended.
