Raw Feeding 101: What It Is, Why It Works, and How to Start
Raw feeding is one of the most searched topics in pet nutrition right now — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's what you actually need to know before you make the switch.
Every week, customers come into our Knoxville stores having heard about raw feeding from a friend, a vet, or a quick scroll through social media — and they all ask the same questions. Is it safe? Is it complicated? Is it worth the cost? After years of carrying raw brands and helping thousands of Knoxville pet owners make the transition, we have clear answers to all three.
What Is Raw Pet Food?
Raw pet food is exactly what it sounds like: food made from minimally processed, uncooked ingredients — typically raw meat, organs, and sometimes raw bones, vegetables, and fruits. Unlike conventional kibble, which is cooked at high temperatures during manufacturing, raw food retains its natural enzymes, moisture, and nutritional profile largely intact.
The philosophy behind raw feeding is rooted in biology. Dogs and cats are carnivores that evolved eating raw prey. Their digestive systems are designed for it — short and highly acidic, built to process raw meat efficiently and kill off most pathogens in the process. Cooking food at high heat changes the molecular structure of proteins and destroys naturally occurring enzymes, making digestion harder and nutrient absorption less efficient.
The Benefits — What Pet Owners Actually Report
We've watched thousands of dogs and cats transition to raw diets over the years. The results our customers report most consistently are:
- Significantly improved stool consistency — smaller, firmer, less frequent stools are almost universal
- Shinier, healthier coat — often visible within the first 4-6 weeks
- Better energy levels — especially in dogs that seemed lethargic on kibble
- Reduced itching and skin issues — particularly in dogs with suspected food sensitivities
- Healthier weight — raw diets tend to support lean muscle mass more effectively than carbohydrate-heavy kibble
- Cleaner teeth — the natural chewing action of raw food acts as a mild dental abrasive
These aren't marketing claims — they're what real customers tell us after making the switch. Results vary by dog, but the pattern is consistent enough that we believe in it completely.
Is Raw Feeding Safe?
This is the most common concern, and it deserves a direct answer: yes, commercial raw pet food is safe when handled properly, just as raw meat is safe for humans when handled with basic kitchen hygiene.
The raw brands we carry — Primal Pet Foods, OC Raw, Blue Ridge Beef, Solutions, Northwest Naturals, Small Batch Pet, and Steve's Real Food — are commercially produced under strict food safety standards. Many use High Pressure Processing (HPP), which kills pathogens without cooking the food. These are not home-prepared raw diets thrown together from grocery store scraps. They are carefully formulated, tested products made by companies that take food safety seriously.
Basic handling guidelines: thaw in the refrigerator, wash hands and surfaces after handling, don't leave uneaten food out for more than 30 minutes. The same common sense you apply to your own food applies here.
The Brands We Carry — and What Makes Each One Different

How to Transition Your Pet to Raw
The transition matters. Going from conventional kibble to raw too quickly can cause digestive upset — not because raw is harmful, but because your pet's digestive system needs time to adjust. Here's the approach we recommend:
Week 1-2: Mix 25% raw with 75% of your current food. Watch for changes in stool and energy.
Week 3-4: Move to 50/50. Most dogs handle this well with minimal adjustment.
Week 5-6: Move to 75% raw, 25% current food.
Week 7+: Full raw if your pet is tolerating the transition well.
Some dogs do better with a faster transition — especially young, healthy dogs with no prior digestive issues. Others, particularly older dogs or those with sensitive stomachs, benefit from a slower timeline. Our team can help you tailor the approach to your specific pet.
A Word on Cost
Raw feeding costs more per serving than most kibble. That's true, and we won't pretend otherwise. But the math isn't as simple as it looks. Dogs on high-quality raw diets typically need to eat less volume because the food is more nutrient-dense and digestible. Vet bills related to chronic skin issues, digestive problems, and weight management often decrease significantly. And there's a harder-to-quantify factor: a dog that's thriving is worth something too.
If full raw isn't in the budget right now, a hybrid approach — raw toppers or freeze-dried raw mixed with a quality kibble — delivers many of the same benefits at a lower cost. Come talk to us and we'll find an approach that works.
